Good news for installers: the Flemish government has given the green light for flexible grid connections. With this new framework, grid operator Fluvius will have the opportunity to connect customers anyway, even in zones where the grid is temporarily saturated. In practice, this means: less waiting time, more projects, and more opportunities to work with smart energy solutions.
Why is this measure necessary?
Pressure on the electricity grid is increasing due to the rapid growth of solar panels, charging stations, and battery systems. Installers and customers are increasingly facing waiting times: projects are ready, but cannot be connected yet.
To avoid Flanders going down the same path as the Netherlands, the government is opting for a proactive approach: better to distribute more intelligently than to come to a standstill.
What changes specifically?
The new regulation introduces a clear framework allowing Fluvius to offer flexible connections to both businesses and individuals.
This brings about important changes for installers on three fronts:
- Faster connection, even with limited capacity
Where previously an application was automatically placed in the queue, Fluvius can now grant a temporary, flexible connection. Specifically, this means that customers can get onto the grid faster, provided that their consumption or injection can be temporarily limited during peak moments.
- Smart technology gets an edge
Batteries, energy management systems, and dynamic control are recognized as ways to relieve the grid. Projects that integrate such technology will be given priority for approval in the future.
- More cooperation and transparency between grid operators
Fluvius and Elia must better share data regarding capacity, connections, and planned expansions. In the long term, this means more clarity for installers when planning new projects. - New dynamics for local energy projects
It will become easier for business parks, residential areas, or cooperatives to realize projects that generate and share energy locally. Flexible contracts can also make a difference there.
What does this mean for installers?
For installers, this measure is a positive development. Projects need to be put “on hold” less often, and you can help customers faster.
